The Luka Legend to Add MVP Chapter in 2024-25 NBA Season

From the time he was a precocious teenager shredding Euro League opposition for Real Madrid, Luka Doncic appeared destined to do the same to NBA defences. Through six years in the Association, the Mavericks’ phenom has done just that and boasts a résumé highlighted by five All-Star selections, five All-NBA nods, and last year's scoring title.

There’s a glaring omission among the individual accolades, however: NBA MVP. Not for the first time, NBA odds like Doncic to break through, with Dallas’s talisman the favourite to win NBA MVP (+360 at BET99).

Doncic has previously held preseason favourite status, but the honour has eluded him. Whether it was a perpetually unavailable running mate (Kristaps Porzingis) or a wildly underwhelming roster around him (2022-23), Luka’s been unable to reach what’s long been seen as a foregone conclusion.

Though Doncic faces thick competition, his early MVP case is clear when compared to most of the rest of the top five on the NBA odds board. Nikola Jokic (+400) is barrelling toward voter fatigue after three MVPs in four seasons; Giannis Antetokounmpo (+790) faces questions around health and his co-star Damian Lillard; and Anthony Edwards (+1100) might be at the table too soon, still just 23 years old.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander (+405) is likely to be his stiffest competition, but SGA’s greatest help — the Thunder’s deep, talented rotation — may only reflect better on Doncic. Should SGA and Doncic end up with similarly gaudy numbers, as they did last year, the conversation could turn to a celebration of what Luka did with a lesser group around him.

In the public eye since his early teens, Doncic has become known as Luka Legend, Luka Magic, or, quite simply, Luka. Should this season go according to plan, he’ll have a new moniker: MVP.
